The Arboretum of Szarvas
The Arboretum of Szarvas is located in the outskirts of town Szarvas along the Kákafok horseshoe lake. Its area is 82 hectares and it consists of five collections of arboraceous plants. Among these collections the oldest and the most valuable one is the Pepi garden, established by the Bolza family, characterized by its peculiar arrangement. This essential nature conservation area is at present under the surveillance of the Faculty of Landscape Architecture of Budapest Corvinus University.
The garden has developed continuously during the decades of its history and the collections now comprise of some 1600 species, cultivars and varieties of trees and shrubs with about 300 conifers among them. An addition, 250 herbs and more than 200 mushrooms are also present. Its diverse flora and fauna makes the Arboretum even more unique. In addition to the 440 known insects, a large number of small mammals live here along with approximately 150 bird species, some of which reside in the arboretum, others are just passing or occur on a seasonal basis only.
Although a man-made environment, due to the professional maintenance activities the garden has become more and more like a natural habitat differing from its surroundings during the past years.
Although the Arboretum of Szarvas has 60-80 thousands visitors every year for being a popular excursion place, it serves educational and research purposes and is also engaged in plant breeding, cultivation and the sales of ornamental plants.
You can visit the Arboretum during the year, every day until darkness.
